In a hearty embrace of winter, Panopticon Gallery in Kenmore Square, Boston has just unveiled an expansive exhibit of alpine panoramas created by the illustrious mountain climber (and founder of Boston’s Museum of Science) Bradford Washburn and his Italian colleague Vittorio Sella. Spanning from the late 1800’s to the 1970’s, these often enormous B&W prints from the Decaneas Archive conjure a higher power and inspire awe.
The two photographers differed in their perspectives, Sella preferring to shoot from the ground and include people and Washburn taking aerial shots of vast terrain. The resulting images are both glorious and austere. The lustrous tonality and sometimes breathtaking contrast in the prints themselves must be seen to be fully appreciated. You can enjoy this exhibit through February 25, 2013.
To explore a more internal landscape, you should not miss Panopticon’s exhibit of contemporary B&W photographer Bill Franson’s work. Look for my review tomorrow!
