Tomorrow is the First Friday in June and there are so many photography shows of note in and out of Boston – opening, ongoing, or closing – that I thought a round-up was in order. I hope this is helpful in sorting through what is most exciting to you, as you pick and choose from Boston’s bumper crop.
Friday, June 3,2016 – in SoWa, Boston’s art gallery district
Gallery Kayafas is opening tonight with two solo female shows, one featuring the pensive and stirring portrait studies of her classmates, “In the Skin I’m In” by RISD photography graduate Nicole Buchanan (feature image). Robert Klein Gallery at Ars Libri is marking the 50th anniversary of the Chinese Cultural Revolution in 1966 with rare color photographs by Solange Brand, then a 19 year old secretary at the French Embassy in Beijing who proved to be intrepid with a camera. Pucker Gallery on Newbury Street is opening “Merging the Known and the Unknown”, new work by Fran Forman, whose magical work has taken a lovely dark and mystical turn. A free, public artist’s reception is today from 3:00 – 6:00pm and Forman will be giving an Artist Talk on Sunday, June 12, 2016 at 2:00pm. Engine Gallery in Biddeford, Maine just opened “That’s What She Said”, featuring new photographs, installation and video by Nancy Grace Horton in her continuing colorful, often slyly humorous, exploration of gender roles, feminism and cultural stereotypes.
