“Pleasure is an important form of knowledge.” – New York magazine senior art critic Jerry Saltz (See: http://blog.sva.edu/2016/02/you-need-to-be-vampires-jerry-saltzs-10-tips-for-art-students/)
This must be payback for last winter. Here we are in February with no blizzards (yet), temperatures trending way above average and light insinuating itself a bit more each day. I think a celebration is in order and, conveniently enough, First Friday is upon us! There’s even a reception tonight, to start the weekend off right. Get ready for some important knowledge…I mean pleasure.
First Friday in Boston’s SoWa Art District (Harrison Avenue)
Griffin Museum at SoWa – Images from Steven Duede’s “Evanescence” series transform the process of natural decomposition into a simultaneous celebration of life and death in vivid, painterly photographs (feature image). Artist’s reception 6:00 – 7:30 pm. https://www.facebook.com/events/106099979773162/
Gallery Kayafas – A moving tribute to the city that never sleeps, “New York: Three Views” features Peter Kayafas’ edgy yet classical B&W street photographs “People in New York”, Aron Rose’s ethereal ode in B&W to “The Last Days of Penn Station” and Lynn Saville’s colorful, whispering reverie “Dark City”. Reception with the artists from 5:30 – 8:00pm, with a book signing by Lynn Saville. http://www.gallerykayafas.com/
Miller Yezerski Gallery – This is the last weekend to catch Karl Baden’s solo show “Emerging”, featuring slyly humorous street photographs that utilize vibrant juxtapositions to highlight the human comedy. My review: https://whatwillyouremember.com/karl-baden-at-miller-yezerski-gallery-boston/
Carroll and Sons – Campy, original B&W photographs by late photographer and NYC 1980’s art scene darling, “Ambiguous Ambassador” Tseng Kwong Chi feature both sly cultural commentary and some of the most dynamic self-portraits I’ve seen. Robert Klein Gallery at Ars Libri – Iranian photographer Gohar Dashti revisits Ars Libri with her latest series, “Stateless”, a pointed and poignant commentary on the world immigration crisis, rendered with her emblematic, austere beauty. “First Thursday” – Artist’s Reception Tonight!
Garner Center at NESOP (Kenmore Square) – This is the last weekend to see Sarah Malakoff’s solo show, “Interior Portraits”, featuring photographs that reveal the intriguing biographies hanging on our walls. Artist’s reception and book signing TONIGHT from 5:30 – 7:00pm. My review: https://whatwillyouremember.com/sarah-malakoff-interior-portraits-at-nesop-boston/
