For a delightful change of pace, treat yourself to the playful and elegant photographs of Chema Madoz. The Spanish artist has exhibited his surreal B&W images worldwide and is now making his Boston debut in a solo show, “Sin Titulo”, at Robert Klein Gallery on Newbury Street through June 21, 2014.
In the experimental tradition of artists like Salvador Dali, Rene Magritte and Man Ray, Chema Madoz creates thought-provoking visual witticisms. With graphically strong designs and skillful fabrications, he conveys intellectual puns, juxtapositions and teasers.
Madoz’s visual metaphors nimbly challenge our rational expectations, enticing us to look closely and then experience the delightful recognition of his capers. Crisp compositions and beautifully executed gelatin silver prints aptly complement the ingenuity of Madoz’s images.
Even the title of the show, “Sin Titulo”, meaning “Without Title” seems to contain an ironic twist. And yet, these photographs are cerebral without being academic and clever without being cute. Like our long-awaited spring, the captivating work of Chema Madoz is a breath of fresh air.
